| Chain | Two rows of interlocked teeth |

Why does tape material matter?
Tape is usually polyester, with cotton and knit options too. Cotton tape can shrink more than polyester in washing. Tightly woven tape is stronger, while teeth can pull away from loose tape. Do not cut the tape edge, as the tear can spread.
What stops do
Stops keep the slider on the zipper. The bottom stop should not carry the load alone, though: a bartack at the lower end transfers the load to the tape.
Pin and box on open-end zippers
One side has the retainer pin and box, the other the insertion pin. Pulling the slider before the pin is fully seated can damage the open end.
Why learn the names?
A precise description reduces the risk of receiving the wrong product. See our zipper ordering guide.

Small parts, big results
The clear film on open-end zippers stops the tape end fraying but can turn white at high heat. On coil zippers, a plastic top stop keeps sharp teeth from sticking out and is advised for children's wear. See slider types and puller types.
