What gets tested?
- Crosswise strength of the chain
- Strength of stops and slider
- Puller attachment
- Repeated opening and closing
- Colour fastness and dimensions
Main standards
| Standard | Where | Scope |
|---|---|---|
| EN 16732 | Europe | Performance levels and test methods |
| ASTM D2061 | USA | Strength tests |
| JIS S 3015 | Japan | Class, strength, washing, colour |
| ISO 10750 and related | International | Stops, opening and closing, pullers |
Can results be compared?
Not directly, because each standard has its own test methods. When reading a report, check which standard and performance class it refers to.
What is OEKO-TEX?
OEKO-TEX Standard 100 is a voluntary label covering harmful substances. It includes accessories and uses classes from baby products to decoration. Check a certificate's validity and scope on the document.
How to plan testing
Identify the tests your product needs and run your own tests on critical products at an accredited laboratory.
Standards at a glance
| Standard | Region | Scope |
|---|---|---|
| EN 16732:2025 | Europe | Performance levels, test methods, colour fastness, dimensions |
| ASTM D2061 | USA | Strength tests |
| JIS S 3015 | Japan | Class, strength, washing, corrosion, colour |
| OEKO-TEX Standard 100 | Worldwide, voluntary | Harmful-substance label by product class |
EN 16732 replaced its 2015 edition in May 2025. These tests are usually voluntary, but a brand or buyer can require them by contract. Chemical limits such as nickel can be legal requirements; see nickel rules.
What is a performance code?
In EN 16732 the required level depends on use. Intertek's summary of the 2015 edition lists code C for children's clothing, C or D for bedding and B or C for pillows. So there is no single "strong zipper" value; you choose the level that suits your product. Get your buyer's required standard in writing at the start and talk to a test laboratory early.
