What is continuous chain?
It is zipper chain sold on rolls, with unfinished ends. Unlike a ready-made zipper, the user decides the length.
Where is it used?
Bags, cushions, upholstery, tents, boat covers and volume garment production are its main uses. It gives cutting flexibility when making many products of different lengths.
How to choose the slider
- Sliders are bought separately and must match the chain size.
- The chain type must match too: A coil slider will not fit metal or molded teeth.
- Buying slider and chain from one supplier reduces compatibility problems.
MAK Zipper produces zipper by the metre and sells all slider and puller types in metal and plastic.
Cutting and finishing
- Cut the chain slightly longer than needed.
- Fit the slider so both sides enter together.
- Secure the ends with stops or stitching so the slider cannot come off.
- Make sure sharp cut teeth on coil chain do not stick out.
A common mistake
On coil rolls, both sides must have the same twist direction. Otherwise the closed zipper can show a wavy "smile".
Cut-and-fit steps
- Cut to length: Add seam and stop allowance.
- Pick the slider: It must match the chain size and type, and it is bought separately.
- Thread the slider: Feed both tapes in at the same time.
- Fit the stops: They keep the slider on at both ends.
- Test: Open and close the full length and check the alignment.
Metal, nylon and molded chain
| Chain | Good for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Nylon coil | Pillows, bedding, bags, tents | Left and right twist must run the same way |
| Molded | Outerwear, covers, marine | Use a slider made for molded chain |
| Metal | Bags, leather goods, visual work | Finish the cut end cleanly |
On coil rolls, if the twist differs between sides the closed zipper "smiles": the tapes ripple. See options on our zipper by the metre page and the slider compatibility guide.
